Cheese Dreams are bite-sized toasted sandwiches filled with a creamy, cheesy mixture that brings a comforting, retro vibe to any occasion. Perfectly golden-brown and buttery, they’re great as snacks or appetizers.
Ingredients
2 cups finely grated sharp Cheddar cheese (freshly grated from a block)
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 Tbsp heavy cream
1 large egg
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp salt
½ tsp dry mustard
Ground red pepper or hot sauce, to taste
1 (16‑oz) package firm white sandwich bread slices
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking sheet.
- Beat grated cheese and softened butter at medium speed until smooth.
- Add heavy cream, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, dry mustard, and ground red pepper or hot sauce; blend well.
- Trim crusts from bread slices and cut each into four squares.
- Spread about 1 teaspoon of cheese mixture on half of the bread squares and top with the remaining squares to form sandwiches.
- Spread more cheese mixture over the top and sides of each sandwich.
- Arrange sandwiches on prepared baking sheet, 1 inch apart.
- Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. If baking from frozen, add 10 more minutes.
Notes
- Use freshly grated cheese for best flavor and texture.
- To freeze, place sandwiches on a tray until solid, then wrap and store for up to three weeks.
- Bake directly from frozen by adding 10 minutes to bake time.
- For a milder flavor, reduce Worcestershire sauce or skip the hot sauce.
- Experiment with different cheeses and seasonings for variety.
