Description

This savory Cheeseburger Pie combines seasoned ground beef, onions, and a fluffy buttermilk batter topped with melted cheddar cheese, baked to golden perfection. It’s a comforting and easy-to-make dish that brings all the flavors of a classic cheeseburger in a convenient pie form, perfect for weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

For the Meat Mixture

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

For the Batter

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole buttermilk, room temperature
  • 1 tbsp. salted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder

For Topping and Serving

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Pickle slices, for serving (optional)
  • Ketchup, for serving (optional)
  • Burger sauce, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to get it ready for baking the pie.
  2. Cook the meat mixture: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and crumbly and onions are softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain excess fat if desired. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and cook for 2 more minutes until absorbed.
  3. Prepare the pie plate: Spray a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Transfer the cooked meat mixture evenly into the prepared pie plate.
  4. Make the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk (at room temperature), and melted butter until smooth. Add the flour and baking powder, then whisk again until the batter is completely smooth.
  5. Assemble and bake: Pour the batter evenly over the meat mixture in the pie plate. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  6. Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve the pie sliced with optional pickle slices, ketchup, and/or burger sauce for classic cheeseburger flavor accompaniments.

Notes

  • You can substitute lean ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Make sure the buttermilk is at room temperature to help the batter mix smoothly and bake evenly.
  • Drain excess fat after cooking the beef to reduce greasiness but leave a bit for flavor.
  • Add diced pickles or sautéed mushrooms to the meat mixture for extra flavor.
  • Use sharp cheddar for a more intense cheese flavor or a blend of cheeses if preferred.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently in the microwave or oven.
