This creamy and flavorful Gouda and Caramelized Onion Dip combines the richness of smoked Gouda cheese with the sweet depth of slowly caramelized onions. Perfectly baked until bubbly and golden, this dip makes a delicious appetizer for gatherings or a tasty snack served with crackers or fresh vegetables.
Ingredients
Caramelized Onions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Dip Mixture
- 8 ounces smoked Gouda cheese, shredded
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes, until the onions become deeply golden brown and caramelized, developing a rich sweetness.
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the dip.
- Combine the Dip Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the shredded smoked Gouda, softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and minced garlic. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
- Incorporate Caramelized Onions: Gently fold the caramelized onions into the cheese mixture ensuring they are evenly distributed without breaking them up too much.
- Prepare for Baking: Transfer the combined mixture into a small baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Bake the Dip: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the dip is bubbly and the top has a light golden color.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the dip from the oven and garnish with fresh chopped chives before serving. Serve warm with crackers, bread, or vegetable sticks.
Notes
- For best caramelization, cook onions slowly and patiently over low heat.
- If you prefer a milder onion flavor, reduce caramelizing time slightly.
- This dip can be prepared a few hours ahead and kept refrigerated; reheat before serving.
- Use smoked Gouda for a deeper smoky flavor, but regular Gouda can be used as a substitute.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper after baking if needed.
