Description

This Saltine Toffee recipe delivers a delightful combination of sweet, buttery toffee atop crispy saltine crackers, topped with a cinnamon sugar sprinkle and optional chocolate drizzle and nuts for a perfect crunchy, sweet treat. It’s an easy and quick dessert or snack that requires minimal ingredients and baking time.

Ingredients

Base

  • 1 package (about 40) Saltine crackers

Toffee Sauce

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Topping

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Optional

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Chopped nuts (pecans, almonds) as desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to ensure easy cleanup and prevent sticking.
  2. Arrange crackers: Lay out the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the entire surface to form a solid base.
  3. Prepare toffee mixture: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter completely. Add the brown sugar and stir continuously until the mixture is well combined and bubbly, indicating the sugar has dissolved properly.
  4. Add flavorings: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt to enhance the toffee’s flavor.
  5. Pour toffee: Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged crackers and use a spatula to spread it across all the crackers, ensuring each piece is coated.
  6. Bake the toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, or until the toffee mixture is bubbly and slightly thickened.
  7. Add cinnamon sugar: While the toffee is still hot, sprinkle the granulated sugar mixed with ground cinnamon evenly over the top, allowing it to stick to the warm toffee.
  8. Optional chocolate topping: If desired, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and drizzle the melted chocolate over the toffee for an extra layer of sweetness and flavor. You may also sprinkle chopped nuts on top at this stage.
  9. Cool completely: Allow the toffee to cool completely so it hardens and becomes crisp before breaking it into pieces for serving.

Notes

  • For easy cleanup, use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat on your baking sheet.
  • To melt chocolate, use a microwave in short bursts or a double boiler to avoid burning.
  • Store cooled toffee in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
  • Add nuts as a topping for extra texture and flavor, but it’s optional.
  • Ensure toffee is bubbly before removing from oven for correct texture.
