Description

Savory spinach and feta puff pastry twists that are crispy, golden, and perfect as an appetizer or snack. Made with a creamy filling of spinach, feta, cream cheese, garlic, and herbs, these twists are easy to prepare and bake to flaky perfection.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach (chopped and lightly sautéed, or thawed frozen spinach squeezed dry)
  • ½ cup feta cheese (crumbled)
  • ¼ cup cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • ½ tsp dried oregano or Italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • Pinch of salt (optional, since feta is salty)

Pastry & Topping

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a bowl, combine the chopped spinach, crumbled feta, softened cream cheese, minced garlic, dried oregano, black pepper, and a pinch of salt if desired. Stir until the mixture is creamy and well blended.
  2. Prepare Pastry and Assemble: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth it. Spread the spinach-feta filling evenly over half of the pastry sheet, then fold the other half over the filling to cover it completely.
  3. Cut and Twist: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the folded pastry into strips approximately 1 inch wide. Take each strip and gently twist it several times to create a spiral effect, then place the twists spaced apart on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Egg Wash and Season: Brush each twist generously with the beaten egg wash to ensure a golden finish during baking. If desired, sprinkle with coarse sea salt for added texture and flavor.
  5. Bake the Twists: Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes or until the twists have puffed up, turned golden brown, and are crisp on the outside.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm as a delightful snack or appetizer.

Notes

  • Use fresh or well-drained frozen spinach to avoid soggy pastry.
  • Adjust seasoning as feta cheese can be quite salty, so add salt sparingly.
  • Egg wash gives a shiny, golden crust but can be omitted for a dairy-free or vegan alternative by using plant-based milk.
  • Serve the twists warm for best texture and flavor.
  • Can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
